Analysis of Population Structure in Korea (1955 - 2000)


Abstract
The purpose of this study is intended to analyze the population structure trends in Korea from 1955 to the year 2000. This study if based on the population and housing census and population projection data from 1985 to the year 2023 published by the Bureau of statistics, Economic planning Board. The results of this study are as follows;
1. The population growth rate was decreased remarkably an account of family planning project from 3% in 1960 to 1.25% in 1985. In 2023, the population growth rate in estimated to be 0% and population size is 52.6 million.
2. The total sex ratio was about 101 and 105~107 at the 0~4 age group.
3. In the population composition of 0~4 age group showing birth rate trends. The proportion of this age group was decreased from the highest level of 18.2% in 1960 to 9.15% in 1985.
4. Population pyramid in Korea showed from pyramid form in 1955 to new style of bell form in 1985, and will be changed to bell form in 2000.
5. The proportion of 0~4 aged population to total population was declined gradually from 41.2% in 1955 to 30% in 1985 and projected to be 23% in 2000. On the other hand the proportion of 15~64 aged population to total population was increased from 54.6% in 1970 to 65.7% in 1985 and will be 70.7% in 2000. Aged population proportion will be increased gradually from 4.3% in 1985 to 6.2% in 2000.
6. The dependency ratio was 88% in 1966, 52% in 1985 and will be 41% in 2000.
7. The proportion of child-bearing women to female population was 49.6% in 1975. 52.9% in 1980, 55% in 1985 respectively. In particular, the increase rate at 20~34 aged group was 3.0% in 1980, 2.6%in 1985. These are higher increase rate than 0.5% increase in 1975.
